The ranch’s roots reach back to the 1920s, when Frank Sentous built Sable Ranch. Ralph Wagner purchased the property in 1940. Over the decades, the adjoining ranches became familiar ground for filmmakers drawn to their variety, privacy and unmistakable sense of place.

That variety remains the defining feature. Mature oaks give way to open pastures and canyon trails. Reservoirs and a mountain lake create water settings, while the built environments offer a different world around every corner: a church, a vintage two-story ranch house, a hacienda, cabins, corrals and a red barn.

A Western street and saloon, train cars and a depot add to the collection of ready-made backdrops. The operator also describes in-ground water tanks used for competition television and production work. Together, these settings have served everything from period storytelling to contemporary music videos.

Recognized within Santa Clarita’s Movie Ranch Overlay Zone, Sable Ranch and Rancho Maria sit within an established film community, with access to the region’s production services and studios. Their appeal is both practical and atmospheric: a connection to Los Angeles, and the freedom to imagine somewhere entirely different.
